An Open Letter to Ellen DeGeneres
Dear Ellen,
Disappointment: The feeling of sadness or displeasure caused by the nonfulfillment of one’s hopes or expectations.
You were someone I admired. A woman I related to. Understood. Funny. A successful gay woman who presented who she really was to the world without fear of judgment or backlash. Charming. Compassionate. Compassionate towards all living beings. A powerful spokesperson for animals. A vegan.
Vegan: A person who does not eat or use animal products.
I am disappointed by the news that you have started a new shoe line, ED by Ellen, that includes hide off an animal’s back. Leather and suede shoes by Ellen DeGeneres. Did I read this right? Sadly, it seems as though I did.
You are a woman so many look up to. Young people. Old people. People. You reach the masses with your talent and charisma. You speak and people listen. Because people want what you have. Because you inspire.
You inspired me, a gay woman, to be proud. To live a genuine and authentic life. To be real with those I love and to not fear judgment from those who will always judge. You inspired me to fight for the voiceless. To speak up for animals. To love and be loved by all living beings. You inspired me to find true compassion….To go vegan. To stay vegan.
What happened to your compassion? What happened to your desire to stop animal suffering? What happened to your voice for the voiceless? You do know the horror and abuse that lives in the leather industry… right? You know your leather shoes will be made of animals who suffered tremendously… right? Of course you do, you’re Ellen. A voice for the animals. But wait….You sell leather shoes? A contradiction. I’m confused.
I am disappointed that your image is no longer that of a warrior for animals. I am disappointed that money purchased your ethics. Your beliefs. I am disappointed that greed beat you. I am disappointed… that my hero is no longer my hero.
I am a vegan. I don’t eat animal products. I don’t wear animal products.
I won’t be wearing your shoes.
Sincerely,
Donna
Don’t forget that Ellen promotes and make money from Covergirl which tests on animals. I haven’t figured out why there isn’t outrage over this. Knowing this Peta still uses her as a spokesperson. Thank you for bringing this to people’s attention.

Wow! I am truly shocked and disappointed upon hearing this! I feel the same way knowing she is a spokesperson for Cover Girl and they test on animals. Shameful 😦

This is sociopathic of Ellen !! I actually respect people who ourwardly say they are carnivorous……doing what she is doing is seedy and void of integrity !!

It seems too many celebrities are only MEgans, only caring about themselves. This would have broken my heart, had it not already been broken by so many selfish celebs that recant their veganism in preference of their dollars. Boo to Ellen, I had truly hoped she was the real deal.

As a lesbian vegan, I’m also disappointed. I don’t really think she can consider herself a vegan, just someone who (allegedly?) doesn’t consume animals in her diet. I wonder if she’ll be wearing her own shoe line at any point.

I thought you were a vegan??
What about your slogan, be kind everybody. Leather is not kind to animals.
Please lead the way in vegan shoes.

with fame comes responsibility, heavy load. It’s now incumbent on you to not be swept away by greed. Your fans were behind you when you came out, now stand behind them, and more importantly, THE ANIMALS WHO HAVE NO VOICE.

Seriously not cool Ellen! I think you have enough $$$ without needing a leather line!! 😦

Disappointing not only because I was under the impression that you were committed to not having animals suffer for entertainment or profit, but because you align yourself with one of the worst enemies of fur bearing animals – the two you are having a photo op with, the alliance of fur hags and supporters of the most extreme animal cruelty known to man, the fur trade. Shame on you.

It’s sad because we love Ellen DeGeneres, yet wealth is intoxicating, few are capable of holding on to their values. I believe people, and animals are more important than money. We support you and your courage.
Best regards always,
Patti

Ellen…I want to continue to think of you as a Conscious, Intelligent, Funny, Compassionate person. Please, don’t disappoint me by selling out to the Traders of Death and their peddlers/pushers/pimps in TV advertising! because Civil Rights, Gay Rights, Animal Rights, Women’s Rights and Human Rights go together and one can not be without the other, lest it be hijacked by Hypocrisy!

I’m not by any means a Vegan, but I admired people who were that strong and dedicated to noble causes–I was starting to get a little suspicious of your humility, when practically everything you gave away had huge ELLEN written on it, even when it was too tacky for words, but you’ll still have your audiences–because all those people love to get the gifts you give away, no matter what–so go on and slaughter your cows, pigs, and sheep–You’ll do just fine–only THEY won’t.

Ellen how could you??!!! Disappointed and disgusted. Not only do I not eat or wear animals I will now boycott any and all of your sponsors. You should be very ashamed of yourself. GO watch the animals being slaughtered for your bloody apparel and tell your sorry but your greed outweighs their right to be free from torture and a cruelpainful death. You once made me smile and proud, now you disgust me!

Ellen, there are some really cool vegan shoe materials out there, check out vegetarian shoes and Stella McCartney’s lines of shoes. You can still do shoes, but you can make them align with the rest of your beliefs. Please say YES

100% agreed. How heartbreaking it is to see someone like Ellen declare veganism only to do something like this, and for no gain but more money. Despicable.

Be real Ellen, you can’t pick and choose. Either you are vegan or your not. I always thought you should mention cruelty to animals on your show (or off your show) since so many people respect you. You could have a large impact on the way people think.
You are slowly loosing that respect.

Ellen does so much good and I believe had a very good heart. I can only hope that she’ll reconsider her decision and make sure any future shoes are made of man made material. I have been extremely disappointed in her for being a spokeswoman for cover girl which is a proctor and gamble product. Proctor and Gamble has been very outspoken about refusing to stop animal testing. I hope Ellen sees this post and at least comments about it.
